Berkri is located north-east from the Lake Van, 16km far from the lake coast. It is 90km far from the city of Van, 40 km from Archesh,. Historically, Berkri was a part of Arberan province of Vaspurakan region in the Greater Armenia. Earlier it belonged to Gnuni dynasty and later on it belonged to Artsruni dynasty.
Berkri was a centre and home of medieval Armenian manuscrips. In the 2nd half of XIX century there was an Armenian college in Berkri.
