Goreme

Christians hiding in this territory from the attacks of the Arabs, called this place “Gor Emi”, which literally means (let nobody sees”, in future the name of this place reached us as “Goreme”. There are numerous cliffs, rock-carved churches which attract the attention of the visitors. During VI – IX centuries Goreme was one of the biggest centres of Christianity. Goreme had almost 400 underground cities, which were used when protecting against the Arabs. It is not known exactly how many people worked on the construction of the underground cities.
