Tigranakert (Artsakh)

Tigranakert is an ancient Armenian city from Hellenistic époque, in Nagorno Karabakh. It is located in the south-east of the Martakert region, on the right bank of the river Khachenaget. It was built in the first century B.C by Armenian king Tigran the Great. Tigran the Great founded 4 cities, which were called after him and which entered the new formed Armenian empire. Since 2010 excavations in Tigranakert are made on three main sectors. In the strengthened quarter built in the region of Tigran the Great opened the northern wall. The second were excavations of citadel, where the rock carved complexes were opened. And the third, there are the excavations of the Basilica church in Tigranakert.
